Dim - The Indestructible Dim

A guide by: Thorin

Hello all! Before I begin, I would like to give my thanks to the team at Hammer and Chisel for bringing us this awesome game and Freewell for the good effort he put into this site to help the community. In this guide, I'll be talking everything about Dim, down to the basics along with the build and strategies I found most successful - TID (The Indestructible Dim) build.

So, our docile and well mannered Mole's obsession with the sun allowed him to harness many of its potent abilities! Let's have a rundown, shall we?

  • Passive: Sun Burn

Arguably the best offensive passives in the game right now, this ability allows Dim to damage his enemy for a few bonus ticks if he successfully casts one of his spells on them. It is quite helpful in getting kills both in early and late game and provides for a visual treat as well, watching your enemies desperately fleeing from your wrath only to find their faces planted to the floor a few seconds later.

In the recent (1.12) update, his passive seems to do additional ticks of damage to his Light Line skill while, reducing the number of ticks in his other abilities.

  • Skill 1: Light Line

Dim's unique and his most feared ability. Dim burns the ground along the path you have drawn out with your finger, pretty cool ain't it not? Use it to to farm (killing tributes for experience and gold), for spacing (keeping your opponent at a distance from you, blocking him off from farming your tributes, when fleeing from an opponent, burning the hidden grass areas to see them jump out in a fashionable manner and the like) and last but not the least to ultimately damage them.

Reading your opponents movements- their attack and retreat patterns is key to use this ability most efficiently. The goal is to try and burn your opponent along entire path for some insane damage. The current additional tick bonus damage with the passive seems to be like a good reward for this. So use it smartly and you will find yourself stacking kills in no time!

  • Skill 2: Sunblast

Another of Dim's potent offensive capabilities, Dim casts a fireball on his opponent, dealing good amount of damage. Use it in sync with Light Line while farming, by casting it on your opponent and immediately following it up with Light Line to push them back and to prevent them them from reaching you and your tributes. Also use it to chase down fleeing enemies, as in most times it is guaranteed to get the kill when your opponent reaches critical health.

  • Skill 3: Infuse/Explode

A pretty handy ability to help to escape tight situations. Tapping once, envelops a shield around him, completely blocking all attack damage alone and tapping again explodes the shield to cause damage to all hostile units in your vicinity. Use it if you find yourself stunned or snared, while retreating, chasing fleeing enemies etc. It can also be used for farming mid and late game (as the mana consumption wouldn't be feasible early on), use it along with Light Line allows for some fast leveling. If you see a bunch of tributes around you with critical health, double tap for instant gold.

  • Skill 4: Solar Flare

Dim's version of the spirit bomb, though instead of damaging enemies,it blinds them, while at the same time reveals the entire map to all your allies, along with a slight damage buff for Dim (not sure if this buff still exists in the current version) while the skill is active. It is best used situationally, to help your allies and surprise your foes. Keep an eye on the minimap, if you see your allies being chased, or engaging enemies at towers, using the skill can give them a good advantage. Also use it just before emerging from the jungle, approaching your opponents from behind and when they flee. Using this before light line and Sunblast gives a better chance to damage them a lot more.

Now that we have gone through our favorite Mole's abilities, we could now look at the items for my preferred build for him. This build has two major advantages.

    1. It's a very tanky oriented build with lots of health and armor, whereby Dim will be able to win most one on one fights and could even at times hold his own against two opponents by himself, while dealing good and fast damage.

    2. This build reaches the maximum skill cooldown cap of 40 %, meaning you can use all of your skills 40% faster than earlier. This combined with his tankiness would make him extremely difficult to approach and kill.

Before starting off, I recommend having his item sets always open to utilize the them efficiently.

    Starting Items

All of Dim's abilities scale with Spell Power. A mana gem and 4 mana potions will give Dim enough mana to effectively farm and push without a break and without retreating back to base untill he reaches about level 4. Place safe here and early game, retreat back to your tower on your health reaching below 50 %.

    Early Game

On reaching level 4, retreat back to the base and start getting your items for the vigor bloom and candle. Go for the soul seed first as it's mana regen would fulfill Dim's mana requirement. It also has a active skill, whereby it restores health and mana over 8 seconds.

    Mid Game

On getting the Candle, start pushing aggressively. Use the candles' active (damage bonus of 150 %) just before casting Sunblast on your opponent. Keep using it as and when it's available for use.

    Final Items

The Icy Manipulator, Citadel Vest and Ko'ral Waders are your CDR items. Most matches would end before you can get the waders, but in prolonged matches, these would enable you to become an indestructible force. If facing other Dims/Elroc/Lee Chi and future Mage characters, get the Citadel Vest before the Icy Manipulator. For a more tanky build, you could replace the final candle with amplifying shell.

  • Relic

    Cold and Concentrated

Given that Dim requires a fair bit of accuracy to cast his spells efficiently, the Cold and Concentrated Relic would better help him do so.

    Ancient Pulse

Using this in Sync with Sunblast can be devastating of fleeing opponents, it helps for a quick retreat too, on explosion of your shield.

    Decimate

Quite a useful Relic for Dim, as given his farming capabilities and his ill luck to get the last hit on tributes most of the time, Decimate helps with both the leveling and the gold.

  • Gameplay

Being a ranged character, Dim is best played at a distance. Always keep your distance from your opponents and cast from afar, space them out to your advantage. Play risk fre and safe early to mid game, once you get your candles, start pushing aggressively. For his abilities, max out his Light Line and SunBlast first for maximum damage before proceding with the others. Use spell/relic/item combos as explained earlier for a more efficient play.

  • Pros & Cons

    Pro's

    - Difficult to kill and take on solo
    - Massive damage with his passive buff along the CDR
    - Can decimate any squishy build relatively easily.

    Con's

    - Difficult to get last hit on Tributes.
    - Low damage on towers and suppressors due to his slow cast speed.

There are more like inherent limitations of playing Dim himself than the build really. Can't think of any notable cons other than the fact that an all Candle final load out build would provide for more damage but at the cost of any spell protection or CDR.

    Conclusion

Thank you for reading so far, I hope you would find this guide useful in some way, looking forward to play with or against you on the Vale, good luck!
